On December 21, the 2023 Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Student Branch hosted a dumpling-making event at the first-floor cafeteria of Wanghai Restaurant, titled Winter’s Anticipation – Finally Fulfilled. More than just a culinary activity, this Winter Solstice tradition enveloped participants in a warm, familial atmosphere while deepening their appreciation for cultural heritage.

What are the traditional customs of Winter Solstice?
Winter Solstice
The day with the shortest daylight and longest night of the year
All things quietly await spring's return
In ancient folk tradition
There is a saying: The Winter Solstice is as significant as the New Year
In southern China
Customs include ancestor worship and festive feasting
In northern China
Eating dumplings is an annual tradition
Now that we've learned about these traditions, let's proceed to the event!

At the event venue, students divided into four groups to knead dough, roll wrappers, and make dumplings. During the process, some demonstrated skilled techniques—chatting cheerfully while folding dumplings with ease—while others, trying for the first time, carefully learned the craft from their peers. The air was filled with the comforting aroma of fresh dough and vegetables.

The venue was neatly arranged, with dumpling molds, tools, and ingredients laid out on long tables, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Enthusiasm ran high as everyone eagerly anticipated transforming their handmade dumplings into culinary works of art. This activity served not only as recreational fun but also as a hands-on educational experience.

The event also featured a Dumpling Competition segment, where participants showcased their creative dumpling shapes. Throughout the competition, laughter and cheerful voices filled the air as everyone engaged in the activity with a lighthearted and joyful mood. Although the outcome of the competition was not the main focus, this format allowed people to enjoy the fun of making dumplings while also strengthening their bonds with one another. The winning team was rewarded with a set of tableware for each member.

As the event concluded, students unanimously expressed how the activity had given them a profound sense of familial warmth and the captivating charm of traditional culture. Many voiced hopes for more frequent celebrations of this kind, wishing to see broader participation in cultural heritage preservation.
