Recently, the 2024 Shandong Provincial Characteristic Institutes and Top-Notch Innovative Talent Cultivation Base Construction List, jointly released by the Shandong Provincial Department of Education and four other provincial departments, was announced. Among them, the Marine Materials Modern Industrial Institute, led by the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Ocean University of China, was successfully selected, highlighting the school's mission and commitment to advancing independent innovation in marine science and technology and serving the nation's maritime power strategy.
Co-founded by the School of Materials Science and Engineering and five leading enterprises—Shandong Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., Shandong Quanwei New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Shengli Xinda New Materials Co., Ltd., Shandong Jingbo Holding Group Co., Ltd., and Marine Chemical Research Institute Co., Ltd.—the Marine Materials Modern Industrial Institute aligns closely with China’s maritime power strategy. It aims to support and guide the development of Shandong’s Top Ten Industries and Qingdao’s 24 industrial chains, focusing on core technical challenges in marine equipment and offshore new energy. Through integrating university-industry resources, the institute drives original and leading-edge scientific research, injecting continuous innovative momentum into achieving high-level self-reliance in marine technology. Leveraging the advantageous resources of Shandong’s leading material industry enterprises, the institute deepens industry-university-research collaboration to optimize the disciplinary structure of materials science and accelerate the cultivation of interdisciplinary innovative talents tailored to market demands and enterprise needs.
Moving forward, the School of Materials Science and Engineering will further explore new models for modern industrial institute construction, refine institutional mechanisms and implementation plans, and solidly advance collaborative tasks. By continuously optimizing the supply-side structure of talent cultivation and aligning closely with industrial development needs, the school strives to comprehensively improve undergraduate education quality and contribute to the maritime power strategy and high-quality local economic development.
