On September 19, 2017, Professor Helmut Colfen of the University of Konstanz, Germany, gave an academic presentation entitled Mesostructured Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials in Conference Room 211 of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. The report was chaired by Professor Wang Huanlei, Director of the Department of Inorganic Science and Engineering. Several teachers and students from the School of Materials Science and Engineering attended the report.
By learning from nature, Professor Colfen first explained the advantages of biofore in terms of formation conditions, materials and ideal crystallization degree, introduced the ingenious design ideas of biological and biomimetic mineralized materials, and introduced how to form organic-inorganic mesoscopic structural materials through controlled adjustment of polymers. It is pointed out that bottom-up method is an effective strategy to synthesize new smart materials. He introduced the application mechanism of medical grade PEEK in bone transplantation in a simple way, and combined with the current situation of orthopaedic diseases in Germany, pointed out the urgent need for the development of artificial bone technology, and expounded the superiority of using organic-inorganic hybrid bionic material design to imitate bone structure to enhance bone connectivity. Professor Colfen's scientific research results have important application prospects in the development and application of biomineralized materials, biomedical self-healing materials and energy.
Professor Colfen's rigorous and meticulous scientific research attitude and humorous words made the entire academic report very full and relaxed. His wonderful speech made us have a deeper understanding of material design. After the presentation, the teachers and students had further discussions and exchanges with Professor Colfen about their own interests or questions. Thank you Professor Helmut Colfen for this wonderful report!
