On the afternoon of March 27, Martien A Cohen Stuart, a famous colloidal scientist, academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and full-time professor of East China University of Science and Technology, was invited to make an academic report entitled Aspects of Coating Technology in Room 211 of the School of Materials. The presentation was presided over by Professor Chen Shougang and attended by many students of our college.

The reaction between colloid and interface plays a very critical role in the study of coatings. Surface treatment of various materials to improve the performance of materials has always been concerned. However, what aspects can be considered for the impact of coating formation process on its performance? Professor Cohen Stuart gave a presentation on the preparation and properties of coatings on a theoretical and experimental basis. The preparation and stabilization conditions of the stabilized emulsion system, as well as the aggregation and fusion of the emulsion on the restricted interface are introduced. It is proved that the direction and speed of emulsion fusion have an important effect on the performance and density of layer formation. Through theoretical calculation, the necessary conditions and critical pressures of emulsion aggregation and fusion in different directions are obtained, which provides a theoretical basis for the control of coating drying process. The second half of the report introduces the preparation and properties of dopamine-modified water-soluble polymers and their coatings. Professor Cohen Stuart introduced in detail the preparation of polymers and the cross-linking mechanism of coating from the aspects of monomer synthesis, copolymerization and multiple reactions of dopamine during cross-linking. The coatings formed based on this polymer show good adhesion properties at different interfaces, and the water resistance is greatly improved after crosslinking, which provides a new idea and an ideal system for preparing water-soluble coatings.

Professor Cohen Stuart's wonderful report gave us a further understanding of coating technology. In the subsequent free exchange, teachers and students discussed with them what they were interested in or had doubts about, and gained a lot.
