Good News | Students from Ocean University of China achieved excellent results in the 15th National College Student Metallurgical Skills Competition

From July 25to30, the finals of the 15th National College Student Metallography Skills Competition were held at Wuhan University of Technology. The university's participating team, led by three advisors from the School of Materials Science and Engineering—Man Cheng, Pang Kun, and Dong Fei—achieved excellent results. Among them,Xu Shixing, majoring in New Energy Materials and Devicesfrom the 2024 cohort, won the individual first prize Liu Mingqi from the Materials Science and Engineering major and Zhang Yuyue from the 2024New Energy Materials and Devices program won the Individual Second Prize; Liang Yue from the 2023Polymer Materials and Engineering program won the Individual Third Prize. The team collectively won the group third prize.

The National College Student Metallurgical Skills Competition is one of the 84 competition projects in the national ranking of regular college student academic competitions. It is the highest-standard, most well-established, largest in scale, and most widely influential national university student academic competition in the materials category in China. It is reported that this competition was hosted by the Teaching Steering Committee for Materials Majors in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education and organized by Wuhan University of Technology, attracting teachers and students from over 600 universities nationwide, setting a new record for the scale of participants.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering attaches great importance to this competition, providing multiple support guarantees such as funding and venues, and has formulated a full-process preparation and training plan covering preliminary mobilization, university competition, provincial competition, simulation competition, and national competition. This year's competition lastedfivemonths, with teachers Man Cheng, Pang Kun, and Du Qing providing meticulous guidance throughout. In collaboration with China University of Petroleum, Qingdao University of Technology, Shandong University of Science and Technology, Qingdao University, Qingdao University, Qingdao Binhai University, and Qingdao City University, seven universities held exchange simulation matches. The competition replaced practice and evaluation to promote learning, comprehensively refining the students' competitive level and mindset on the field.

In recent years, the School of Materials Science and Engineering has consistently adhered to the educational philosophy of promoting teaching through competitions, learning through competitions, and innovation through competitions, deeply embedding academic competitions into the talent cultivation system. The college has compiled and released a whitelist of discipline competitions, issued special incentive documents, and improved the competition cultivation mechanism from multiple dimensions including funding support, venue guarantees, and faculty investment.
