On May 20, the 13th session of the Distinguished Lecture Series was held at the West Coast Campus. The event featured a keynote lecture by Xu Huibin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at Beihang University. Wang Houjie, Vice President of Ocean University of China, presided over the event and presented Academician Xu with the honorary title of “Blue Dream Navigator” on behalf of the university.

Using the theme “One Generation of Materials, One Generation of Engines” as a starting point, Academician Xu focused on major scientific and technological breakthroughs in key components of aero-engines and introduced his team’s latest research progress in critical materials for aerospace propulsion systems. He noted that traditional materials development has long relied on trial-and-error approaches and lengthy development cycles, while emerging technologies represented by artificial intelligence are reshaping the paradigm of materials research and development. These advances, he explained, are creating new pathways for achieving independent innovation in aero-engine materials in China. Facing new opportunities and challenges, he emphasized the importance of strengthening indigenous innovation, accelerating breakthroughs in critical core technologies, and contributing to the nation’s goal of building a world-leading science and technology powerhouse while achieving greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology.

During the interactive session, students actively engaged with the speaker, creating a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere. Drawing on his own research experience and personal growth journey, Academician Xu discussed topics including disciplinary development, career planning, and personal development. He also wrote personalized messages for students who raised questions during the session. Encouraging young scholars to dedicate themselves to the field of marine materials, he called on students to pursue rigorous research, embrace innovation, remain confident in their aspirations, and contribute to the development of Chinese marine affairs and maritime strength.
More than 170 faculty members and students from various schools and colleges at the West Coast Campus attended the event, including representatives from the Academic Affairs Office and the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
