Recently, the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province announced the list of Shandong Provincial Key Laboratories (third batch) to be established in 2025. The Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Equipment Materials and Protection, led by the College of Materials Science and Engineering, has been successfully approved (a total of five such laboratories were approved for the university). This is the first Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory awarded to the college, marking a significant breakthrough in the construction of scientific research platforms and the enhancement of innovation capabilities.
The Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Equipment Materials and Protection will be led by Ocean University of China, in collaboration with Qingdao Gangyan NCS Testing and Protection Technology Co., Ltd. Guided by national marine strategic needs and the economic and social development demands of Shandong Province, the laboratory will focus on major scientific issues and key core technologies in areas such as materials for extreme marine environments, functional protective materials for marine applications, materials for marine energy storage and conversion, and in-situ evaluation and service life assessment of marine materials. It aims to develop advanced materials and corresponding preparation technologies, including ultra-high-strength, low-temperature-resistant, and wear-corrosion-resistant materials, high-energy beam processing technologies, special functional protective materials for deep-sea environments, key materials and technologies for efficient photo-wave-microbial coupled energy systems in marine environments, and key materials and technologies for diversified conversion and storage of marine energy. The laboratory will also investigate the service performance of materials under multi-field coupling conditions in marine environments, providing driving force and new growth opportunities for the marine equipment industry.
The successful approval of the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Equipment Materials and Protection signifies high recognition of the college's disciplinary layout and scientific research innovation capabilities in the field of marine engineering materials. The college will seize this opportunity to continuously increase investment in scientific research and accelerate the application and transformation of research outcomes. The laboratory will be developed into a leading research and achievement transformation center for marine materials in China, providing solid scientific, technological, and talent support for Shandong Province's marine equipment industry to advance toward high-end development.
