On December 17, 2024, Professor Wang Xiaolei, Chief scientist of Canada and University of Alberta, was invited to exchange and visit the School of Materials Science and Engineering. and made an academic report entitled Rechargeable & Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries and Supercapacitors, the report was chaired by Professor Liu Wei, deputy dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering.

Professor Wang Xiaolei summarized the research progress of his research group in the development of high-performance zinc-ion batteries and supercapacitors using electrode and electrolyte engineering, and deeply discussed the key electrode materials and technologies of zinc-ion batteries. Firstly, a new strategy to construct the negative electrode of zinc-ion battery using porous carbon substrate is introduced, which can effectively inhibit the formation of zinc dendrites on the negative electrode during the charging process, so as to significantly extend the battery life. On this basis, they further explored the influence of solute molecules in the electrolyte on the growth mechanism of zinc dendrites during the charging process of water-based zinc-ion batteries, and found that polar groups on the solute molecules are more inclined to bind with zinc ions, so as to achieve efficient zinc deposition and avoid dendrite growth. In addition, Professor Wang Xiaolei's research group has also developed a zinc-free negative electrode composed of conductive polymers, and the zinc-ion batteries and supercapacitors constructed have shown excellent performance. Finally, Professor Wang Xiaolei looked forward to the development trend of high-performance positive electrodes, and shared the solution strategy for key issues such as battery recycling.

The scene of the report meeting

The report aroused strong interest of teachers and students present, and many teachers and students actively asked questions on the preparation and application of key electrode materials for zinc ion batteries, and carried out interactive exchanges, and the atmosphere was very warm. This lecture is one of the series of lectures of Ocean University of China, sponsored by the Graduate School of the University and undertaken by the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
